However, it is crucial for citizens in a country to keep the environment clean by getting rid of dirt and trash. Most people are not concerned about keeping their environment clean, but a polluted and unclean environment causes diseases such as malaria, typhoid and other unknown health hazards known to man. It also causes environmental disasters such as blockage of drainage systems and erosion.

Many Nigerian states are dirty, which is true, but a few states are messier than others. The rating information for this post was obtained from internet surveys, clean up Nigeria and the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP). The following is the list of the dirtiest states in Nigeria;
- Abia State
Abia is the dirtiest state in the country, even though it is a famous city where virtually local goods are produced. Moreover, unlike Lagos, Abia state does not suffer overpopulation. Yet, the Abia resident still suffers from uncleanliness and battle with erosion, floods, and other hazards, which has led to the loss of properties.
- Lagos State
Lagos state is one of the dirtiest states in Nigeria. Aside from the fact that Lagos state is one of the country’s most populated and developed states. Some parts of Lagos slack when it comes to general neatness and waste administration.
However, this is primarily due to the overpopulation and mass urban migration experienced in the state.
- Kogi State
Kogi state is one of the country’s least developed states, with most of its indigenes poorly educated on the dangers of living in an unclean environment. However, one of the reasons why the state government often overlooks waste management. It is because they are partly faced with the issue of insurgency and banditry.
- Osun State

- Nasarawa State
One of the reasons why many people believe the Nasarawa state government often overlook waste management. They are battling the Boko Haram insurgency and banditry, contributing to its uncleanliness problem.
- Kaduna State
Kaduna is one of the dirtiest states due to the resident’s nonchalant attitude towards cleaning the environment. However, the state government might be doing a good job keeping the state capital clean, but the market and small towns are filthy.
- Zamfara State
Zamfara state is one of the dirtiest states due to the misuse of funds allocated for proper waste management systems. Although, Zamfara states still suffer from terrorism and corruption, which has contributed to its uncleanliness problem.
